THE COAST

MAIN SQUARE

Martín de Estete designed this square as the center of the city.  In the center of the square you can see the Freedom Monument: a baroque style marble sculpture, a work of German sculptor Edmund Müller.

CHAN CHAN

This ancient city consisted of streets, walls and pyramidal temples. You can still appreciate its majestic walls decorated with bold relief designs like geometric figures and animal shapes. There is a site museum and it was declared a Cultural Heritage of Humanity.

HUANCHACO BEACH

In its waters the “Caballitos de Totora” still sail; they are traditional boats made of reeds that are used by local fishermen since Pre-Columbian times.  Huanchaco is one of the favorite beaches for surf lovers. This beach is a tourist place and is the scene of international surfing competitions, being known by Longboard Pro Peru, a world longboard championship that takes place every year during summer.

HUACA DEL SOL Y DE LA LUNA (SUN AND MOON TEMPLES)

Legend has it that these temples were built by 250 thousand men in three days and that 140 million adobe bricks were used to build them; and that human sacrifices were performed in Huaca de la Luna (Moon Temple)… Inside, the archaeologists found the remains of up to 40 warriors!

EL BRUJO ARCHAEOLOGICAL COMPLEX

The highlight at this complex is the discovery of the grave of the Lady of Cao, who was an ancient woman that was possibly the leadership in religious and political terms in the Chicama valley during the 300s AD. This is what the richness of the burial site testifies, suggesting that she might have been a woman of a very high social class within Mochica society and that she was involved in religious practice and ancestor worship.

MALABRIGO PORT AND BEACH

This small coastal town has become a paradise for national and foreign surfers. The longest left wave in the world is created in its waters, with waves that form tubes know as “Chicama waves”. This is why this part of Peruvian coast is the favorite place for surfboard championships.
